BOSSIER CITY, Louisiana – The Lyon College men’s and women’s wrestling teams competed in the National Collegiate Wrestling Association (NCWA) Championships held at the Brookshire Grocery Arena in Bossier City, LA.
The men’s championship tournament lasted three days, Thursday, March 14th through Saturday, March 16th. At the conclusion of Day One, four Scots advanced to the second day.
Ty Ferguson and Jacob Kehrer kicked off Day Two with pins after losing their last match the evening before. They continued on to win their second match of the day advancing themselves into the blood round. In the blood round both Ferguson and Kehrer were bested by their opponents finishing their season just shy of All-American status.
On Friday, March 15th, the women’s wrestling team stepped up to the line for their first day of competition at the NCWA Championships.
After receiving a first round bye, junior Mikayla Wallace put on a dominant display winning two matches in a row advancing herself into the semifinals at 136 pounds. Wallace then went toe-to-toe in her next two matches of the day. She wrestled through some tough scrambles, but was ultimately defeated by her adversaries putting her in the 5th place bout.
Sidney Milligan started off the tournament receiving a forfeit. In her second match of the day, Milligan majored her opponent from Utah Tech University. The freshman lost in the quarter-finals at 155 pounds but rallied back with three huge, hard earned wins to advance into the third place match.
All placement matches were wrestled on Saturday March 16th. In the women’s division only those who placed 1st through 5th in their weight class were awarded All-American status.
With an All-American title on the line, the junior from Kemah, TX made quick work of her opponent. Mikayla Wallace recorded a first round pin just 1 minute and 35 seconds into the match securing her spot on the podium. Sidney Milligan also concluded her time at the NCWA Championships with a win. Milligan won her third place match by Major Decision over her opponent from Grand Canyon University.
