HAYS, Kansas – The Scots walk away from the Bob Smith Open with three medalists. Mikayla Wallace and Sidney Milligan finished in third place in their respective weight classes while freshman, Rubi Gonzalez, battled her way to a fourth place finish at 109 pounds. Coach Shawn Contos is very proud of the success his team saw this weekend, and can attest to the progress that they all are making.

After recording a loss in the semifinals of the 136 pound weight class, junior Mikayla Wallace battled through the back end of her bracket. She overcame her next opponent from Fort Hays State University 10 – 0. Wallace eventually earned her third place finish via pin in the second round of the match.

After losing in the quarterfinals of the 155 pound weight class freshman, Sidney Milligan, stepped up to the line three more times, winning every one of those matches. In similar efforts to Wallace, Milligan was able to wrestle her way back to a third place finish. Her third place match proved not to be an easy breeze, but the freshman was able to stand her ground and ultimately beat her opponent by decision 8 – 4.

Newcomer to the Scots, Rubi Gonzalez, demonstrated her resilience as she went through a roller coaster of highs and lows throughout the tournament. She started her day off with a win in the quarterfinals at 109 pounds. Gonzalez fell to her opponent in the semifinals, but bounced back with a win in the consolation semifinals earning her bout into the third place match.

The Scots will return to action after the holidays on January 5th for their first home dual of the season against Fontbonne University.
