The Fighting Scots Women Wrestlers traveled to Fulton, Missouri to take on the Westminster College Blue Jays on Sunday, November 5th. Going into the Dual Meet, the Blue Jays held a higher place in the SLIAC Rankings, so Coach Shawn Contos was excited about the opportunity to see where his young team was at early in the season.
The Scots did not disappoint! Led by Junior Mikayla Wallace, Lyon took the victory by a Team Score of 20-5. Wallace secured a first period pin over her Blue Jay opponent. Freshman Sidney Milligan began her highly anticipated Lyon Wrestling career on a high note dominating her adversary, pinning her in just under 2 minutes. Freshman Madisen Nash got her first exposure to the college wrestling experience against a Veteran Westminster wrestler. While coming up short of her first victory, she has shown positive signs of improvement and will no doubt break into the win column soon. Two Scot Women Wrestlers, Rubi Gonzalez and Amy Jacobs, went 1-0, receiving forfeits, to begin their college wrestling careers. Both contributed to the Lyon Team Score, helping secure the win.
Coach Contos is happy with the way the team started the season, and is excited for the progress the ladies are making. “We did some good things, and we have somethings we need to work on. Overall, we will continue to focus on what we can control, and keep getting better everyday,” the Coach said.
The Women Wrestlers will be back on the mats next weekend in Poteau, OK at the Carl Albert Viking Open on Sunday the 12th.
