The Springdale High School wrestling team kicked off their season by competing in the Wildcat JV tournament and the Lady Wildcat Invitational on November 19^th.at Har-Ber High School.

Twenty-three boys wrestled in the JV tournament giving the coaches a chance to observe the new wrestlers to see who will earn a spot on this year’s varsity team. The Lady Bulldogs had eighteen girls compete and go on to earn a third-place finish in their first varsity tournament.

Head coach Josh Rivers said, “the girls really surprised me! I knew we had the potential to be good, but it’s hard to judge until you get out and compete. We had a few girls get banged up that did not wrestle so it’s going to be exciting to watch them grow as the season goes on.

As for the boys’ team, I am super proud of how they battled. We had seventeen of the twenty-three guys medal and most of those were either freshmen or sophomores. The boys’ team has a bright future if the young guys’ success is any indication.”

In addition to many new wrestlers this season, the team has a brand-new assistant coach. Coach Lauren Ashby is a teacher at Springdale High School and has been hired to help with the administrative duties and manage the growing girls’ team.

Although Coach Ashby does not come from a wrestling background, her daughter Emily has been competing for the girls’ team the past two years, so she has been a steady and positive presence at the competitions.

Coach Ashby was excited to coach her first wrestling matches at the Invitational, and she is looking forward to contributing to the team’s success.

Springdale High School’s next competition is for the girls’ team to travel to Oklahoma to compete in the Jay Border Wars on Dec 2nd and 3^rd.
