OTERO TAKES FIRST, THREE OTHERS IN TOP FOUR AT DRURY OPEN

SPRINGFIELD, Missouri – Ouachita junior wrestler Jaylon Otero ran the table in the 157 bracket at the Drury Open this past Saturday for his third undefeated weekend of the season.
 
Otero entered the weekend at No. 16 in the latest national rankings from The Open Mat. He now owns a 17-3 record this season following his four wins at the Drury Open, including one by fall and two by major decision. He took down Central Missouri’s Connor Johnston in the first-place match with a 5-1 decision.
 
Other top wrestlers for the Tigers included Jimmy Anderson with a second-place finish at 133, Samuel Schmidt with a fourth-place finish at 165, and Donald Paul with a fourth-place finish at 285.
 
Anderson earned one win by fall and two by decision before falling in the first-place match to Central Missouri’s Seth Guiterrez by major decision.
 
Schmidt had dominating wins in the 165 open, earning a win by fall (2:39) in the opening round before dropping his second-round bout to Central Missouri’s Gavin Goddard. In the consolation bracket, he earned wins by tech fall (18-1) and by major decision (14-5) before falling in the third-place matchup to Central Missouri’s Anthony Erickson by a 9-2 decision.
 
Paul had a tough fight through the heavyweight bracket, getting a three-point decision in the opening round and then a win by fall in 4:38 in the second round. In the quarterfinals, he and Central Missouri’s Trent Strong had a close bout with Strong coming out on top 5-3. Paul then won by decision and no contest in the consolation bracket before being paired with Matthew Weinert, a D1 wrestler from Little Rock, in the third-place bout. Weinert earned a major decision 14-3.
 
The Tigers are on the mats twice this week, heading to Clarksville on Wednesday for a dual with the University of the Ozarks and then heading to Miami, Oklahoma this Saturday to dual against Northeastern Oklahoma A&M.
