Lyon College wrestling results from 2025 Duroe Invitational

MOUNT VERNON, Iowa — Lyon College men’s and women’s wrestling competed at Cornell College’s 2025 Cliff-Keen Mike Duroe Invitational on Saturday.

The Scots’ women’s team sent three wrestlers to the tournament, as Mikayla Wallace, Sidney Milligan, and Rubi Gonzalez all competed at the event.

Wallace competed in the 138-weight division, where she opened the day with a 10-0 technical fall victory over Adelle Patterson of Simpson College. In the quarterfinal round, Wallace fell to Alexis Ross of Iowa Central Community College via technical fall 12-2. In the consolation rounds, Wallace fell via pin fall at the 2:29 mark to Mattie Papenthien of the University of Dubuque, however she also picked up her second victory of the day via 12-2 technical fall against Averi Burke of tournament hosts, Cornell College. Wallace secured her third victory in the 7th-place match, where she defeated Krystol Luna of Iowa Central Community College via a 9-0 decision. Overall, Wallace finished in seventh place with a 3-2 on the day, securing 8.5 points for the Scots.

Milligan competed in the 160-weight division, where she secured a pin fall victory over Emma Stevenson of Cornell College at the 4:39 mark. In the second round, however, Milligan would lose via technical 12-0 fall to Alex Harswick of Wartburg College. After both a bye and a forfeit victory over Randi Nicholson of Wartburg College, Milligan closed out her day with a pin fall loss at the 5:12 mark against Jaida Johnson of Wartburg College. Milligan finished 2-2 on the day overall and secured six points for the Scots.

Gonzalez competed in the 110-weight division, where she finished in eighth place with an 0-3 record on the day, picking up three points for Lyon College. Her losses came via pin fall at the 3:38 mark to Milar Little of Cornell College, pin fall at the 0:40 mark to Sophia Miller of Simpson, and a 7-1 decision against Hope Chiattello of Wartburg College.

The Scots’ men’s team had four wrestlers compete at the tournament, as Clay Queen Jr., Ty Ferguson, Eli Lupton, and Shmuel “Sam” Tabak each had showings at the tournament.

Queen Jr. competed in the 149-weight divsion, and started his day against Nate Wood of Cornell College, where fell to Wood via pin fall at the 5:56 mark. Queen Jr. bounced back with a pin fall victory against Austin Franklin of Luther College just over a minute into the bout at the 1:14 mark. Queen Jr. closed the day with a pin fall loss to Hagan Taylor of Loras College. Overall, Queen Jr. finished the day 1-2, securing the only 2.5 points for the Scots on the day.

Ferguson, Tabak, and Lupton each finished 0-2 at the tournament.

Ferguson competed in the 125-weight division, and fell via 17-2 technical fall against Raekwon Shabazz of Wartburg College in the opening round. After receiving a bye in the consolation round, Ferguson fell in a hard-fought battle against Chris Karbash of the University of Wisconsin-Platteville, narrowly losing via a 10-6 decision.

Tabak competed in the 133-weight division, and fell in the opening round of the championship bracket on an 8-4 decision against Christian Kemp of Loras College. In the consolation bracket, Tabak fell to Brady Grennan of the University of Wisconsin-Platteville via pin fall at the1:07 mark.

Lupton competed in the 197-weight division, where fell in both of his matches by way of pin fall against both Jacob Schimek of Augsburg University and Jackson Ormond of the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse.

The Scots’ women’s wrestling team will be back in action next Friday, January 24 when they travel to Denton, Texas for a dual against Texas Women’s University. The men’s wrestling team for Lyon College will be back in action on Saturday, February 1 when they travel to Lebanon, Tennessee to compete at the 2025 Cumberland University Open.
